Morris Museum Executive Director Curates: Abstract Art from the Permanent Collection

Image
MORRISTOWN, NJ.- The age of the museum director who can also be an active curator is pretty much over, at least in larger institutions. Today directors’ days are devoted to management and administration as they work with boards of trustees on governance issues, fundraise, collaborate with staff and generally represent their museums in a wide range of public and private capacities. Substantive curatorial work takes place sparingly and usually through intermediaries. This summer, Steven H. Miller, executive director of the Morris Museum, Morristown, NJ, has returned to his curatorial roots and created a temporary exhibition drawn from the museum’s abstract art.

With a deft hand he has even recreated the actor Patrick Swayze and Sharbat Gula, the Afghan woman with amazing eyes who was made famous by National Geographic magazine. And in an admirable green-fingered move, the artist got his idea and started chipping away when he noticed piles of unused phone books just lying around. He said: "Every year when the new phone book comes out you see just piles of the old ones lying around waiting for collection. "I'm sure a lot of hard work goes into recycling them but there are thousands that go unused at all because most people just use the internet to find people these days. "I was out look

Alias Man Ray: The Art of Reinvention November 15, 2009 - March 14, 2010 Introduction The constant motif of Man Ray’s life was liberation, change, and transgression: whether in name, medium, style, or content, he sought to free the object or subject of its limitations, just as he sought to free himself from his own personal origins and outsider past. The exhibition will demonstrate how the artist’s assimilation, his emergence from an immigrant world of stereotype, ethnicity, and fixed identity, produced a dynamic polarity of revelation and concealment. It will examine the myriad means he used to create this willful construction of veiled identity, revealing a hide-and-seek game of encrypted self-reference seen throughout his oeuvre. His relentless chronicling of his career through self-portraits exemplifies this conundrum, as does his autobiography, “Self-Portrait,” which, without dates or reference to his family or origins, purported to chronicle his life. Alias Man Ray argues that is

About the spectacular Chinese sculptural group Rent Collection Courtyard (Chin.: Shouzuyuan).

Image
Frankfurt, Germany - In conjunction with China’s appearance as Guest of Honour at the 2009 Frankfurt Book Fair, the Schirn will be showing, for the first time ever in the West, the spectacular Chinese sculptural group Rent Collection Courtyard (Chin.: Shouzuyuan). This ensemble of more than 100 life-size figures is among the most important works in modern Chinese art history, and is firmly embedded in China’s collective memory. Created as a site-specific installation in Dayi in 1965 by teachers and graduates of the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute in Chongqing, the group of figures soon became a model artwork of the Cultural Revolution, which began in 1966. Over the following years several variations of the work were made and exhibited throughout China, only one of which survives today. This is a mobile travelling version made in 1974–78 from copper-plated fibreglass at great expense, and is located in the art museum of the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute in Chongqing, central China.
