invitation for an opening Friday August 6...Gallery Muriel Guepin

Please join us on Friday August 6, from 6:30 - 9 pm for our new group show featuring the artwork of :

CLAUDIA SBRISSA AND ALEXANDRE GUILLAUME
OPENING RECEPTION FRIDAY, AUGUST 6 FROM 6:30-9 PM
ON VIEW FROM AUGUST 6, 2010 UNTIL SEPTEMBER 12, 2010
Muriel Guepin Gallery is pleased to present a group exhibition of new works by Claudia Sbrissa and Alexandre Guillaume.

Sbrissa's mixed-media drawings on paper, dense with energy and line work, recall stringy, planktons or molecular shapes. In her own words, "My work is reflective of my feminist artistic identity and is suffused with a quality of romance and material transcendence."
Guillaume's acrylic paintings offer a more masculine take on abstraction. In his work, Guillaume incorporates the speed, brutality and impatience we experience in daily life to create paintings that ultimately leave the viewer in peace. A thick, carefully placed, large brush stroke interrupts a solid ground to end in light, airy splashes of thin lines, alleviating an omnipresent tension. His palette ranges from a monochromatic grey, to a swath of black paint on a bright orange, yellow, blue or red ground.

Together, these artists share a vivid and contrasted palette and offer viewers a unique and nuanced take on abstraction. Their work will be on view at the gallery from August 6th through September 12th.

At the talk, Ji will also speak about his life and experience as a Chinese artist in New York, a city that has embraced many of his Chinese peers like Ai Weiwei, Cai Guo-Qiang, and Xu Bing.
The event takes place on Saturday, July 31, 14: 30-16: 30. The talk is solely in Chinese.

Yun-Fei Ji:

Yun-Fei Ji (b. 1963, Beijing) studied at Central Academy of Fine Art, Beijing and relocated to the US in 1986. Executed in traditional Chinese watercolor inks and on traditional papers, Ji’s work recalls traditional
Chinese landscape painting, especially that of the Song period. Ji received the 2006 American Academy Prix de Rome fellowship and residency, and, in 2007, was artist-in-residence at Parasol Unit foundation for contemporary art in London. In 2005, Ji was artist-in-residence at Yale University where he conducted extensive research with the institution's scholars. Ji's important solo museum exhibition, The Empty City, 2004, originated at the Contemporary Art Museum (St. Louis, Missouri) and toured to the Rose Art Museum, Brandeis University, Massachusetts, and the Peeler Art Center, De Pauw University, Indiana. In 2004, the exhibition Yun-Fei Ji: The East Wind was organized at the ICA, University of Pennsylvania. Ji's work has been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions throughout the United States and Europe, including the Whitney Biennial 2002. In 2008, Displacement: The Three Gorges Dam and Contemporary Chinese Art, an exhibition of four Chinese artists originated at the Smart Museum of Art, Chicago, and continues to tour nationally. Yun-Fei Ji lives and works in New York.

Welcome to NEW JERSEY MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART (NJ MoCA)

BRAVO ROBIN
Welcome to NEW JERSEY MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART

Still a twinkle in the eye but with development on a fast track, New Jersey Museum of Contemporary Art (NJ MoCA) will strive to present scholarly programming drawn from an international talent pool of contemporary artists and to provide enriching cultural, educational, outreach and social experiences that will captivate audiences in new ways, create a sense of community, enhance the lives of children and the underprivileged, and benefit the region. The encouragement from so many highly esteemed gallerists, collectors, curators, artists and critics for this far-reaching vision and unique positioning in New Jersey has been validating and greatly appreciated.
Until the museum’s website is designed, we hope the information here will give some basic but rich insight into the genesis of what we hope will become an international destination for the contemporary arts.

Success Garanteed For all audiences...and free! @ the New Museum

Rivane Neuenschwander: A Day Like Any Other
Eu desejo o seu desejo / I Wish Your Wish (2003) is installed in the lobby gallery as part of the exhibition "Rivane Neuenschwander: A Day Like Any Other". Visitors are invited to select ribbons printed with a wish to tie around their wrists. When the ribbon falls off, tradition has it that one's wish will be fulfilled. Visitors may write another wish and place it in the empty hole. This work of art is based on a similar practice that takes place at the church of Nosso Senhor do Bonfim (Our Lord of the Good End) in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil.
