Canstruction

Canstruction® is an international charity competition where architects, engineers, contractors and students they mentor, compete to design and build giant structures made entirely from full cans of food. At the close of the competition all of the food from the New York City competition will be donated to City Harvest.

New York City is joined by 100 cities across North America who will hold Canstruction® Competitions in the coming year. Highlighting the creativity and compassion of top architectural and engineering firms, these astounding structures are helping to change the world – by lifting the spirits of those in need, by raising public awareness, and most importantly, by collecting millions of pounds of food for local food banks.

Structures are exhibited in the Winter Garden and Courtyard Gallery of the World Financial Center, 220 Vesey Street and the West Side Highway. There will be a total of 40 structures in the exhibition. 22 structures located in the Winter Garden will be on view from November 20 – December 2, from 7am – 11pm. 18 structures located in the Courtyard Gallery will be on view from November 20 – December 8, 9am – 5pm. Both the Winter Garden and Courtyard Gallery will be open during the Thanksgiving Holiday. The public is invited to bring a can of food to donate to City Harvest at that time.

All Student Group Tours must be reserved in advance by emailing education@actioncenter.org. Please reference booking code: CAN08 in the subject line. There must be one chaperone for every 5 students. Students must be on their best behavior as there can be no risk of damage to the structures.

The New York City Canstruction® Competition is now in its 16th year thanks to the hundreds of volunteers, contributors and participants who dedicate their time and talent. Complete listings of firms, jurors, contributors and committee members are available in the Downloads section.

The New York City competition is Co-Presented by the Society for Design Administration New York Chapter, the AIA New York Chapter and arts>World Financial Center.
