Arts Scene
Enjoy the fall weather by visiting the magnificent floral displays at the New York Botanical Garden. Botanists here learned how to cultivate chrysanthemums during a five-year cultural exchange with Japanese growers, and the resulting fall blooms are on display in Kiku: The Art of the Japanese Chrysanthemum. Over at the American Museum of Natural History, the effects of global warming are explained in Climate Change: The Threat to Life and A New Energy Future. John Adams’ contemporary opera, Dr. Atomic, opening in mid-October at the Metropolitan Opera, explores a momentous episode of modern history: the creation of the atomic bomb. The title role of J. Robert Oppenheimer is sung by baritone Gerald Finley. And the noted sculptor Alexander Calder gets an unusual retrospective at the Whitney Museum, highlighting his early work from the age of 27 to 34, in Alexander Calder: The Paris Years, 1926–1934. Featuring Calder’s charming Circus, the exhibition looks at the birth of the artist’s signature mobiles.
