What About the "Eight" ?

8=5 (Robert Henri + William Glackens + George Luks + Everett Shinn +John Sloan)
+ 3 (Arthur B Davies, Ernest Lawson + Maurice Prendergast)
This group of eight painters, many of whom had experience as newspaper illustrators in Philadelphia, had its genesis in protest and secession. The Eight found common cause with Robert Henri's resignation of the National Academy of Design.
The Eight's first and only exhibition as a group opened in 1908 at Macbeth Galleries in New York and created a sensation. (then traveled to Philadelaphia, Chicago and other regional centers.)
The Eight are remembered as a group, despite the fact that their work was very diverse in terms of style and subject matter—only five of the artists (Henri, Sloan, Glackens, Shinn, and Luks) painted the gritty urban scenes that characterized the Ashcan School.

The Eight were later dubbed the Ashcan School because of their gritty depictions of urban scenes
