Is New York becoming the new Stockholm? Judging from the crowds lined up at the East River Ferry’s 34th Street pier last weekend, it’s not a bad guess. New York is, after all, an archipelago, with islands of art and culture beckoning.
For an art-by cycle-tour of Long Island City and Brooklyn, the ferry company offers an all day hop-on hop-off ticket for $15 – bicycle included. Information. Stops at Long Island City, Greenpoint, North Williamsburg, South Williamsburg, and Brooklyn Bridge Park will get you to venues such as Socrates Sculpture Park, the Noguchi Museum and Sculpture Garden, MoMA PS1, Photoville, and dozens of art galleries. WagMag, the Brooklyn Art Guide, has all you need to know for that borough, including maps.
If you want to continue on to Governors Island (Saturdays, Sundays and Holiday Mondays through September 30th), stay on until the last stop at Pier 11, where boats depart from 10:10 am to 3:25 pm. Information. Or you can cycle about a half mile further south to the island’s dedicated free ferry service. Information. There are outdoor and indoor art exhibits, dance performances, workshops -- and free kayaking on Saturdays. Information.
During the summer months, the East River Ferry also carries music and art lovers to events on Randalls Island. Last week it was the Governors Ball Music Festival, a sold-out two-day rock and acoustic music event headlined by Fiona Apple, Beck and Modest Mouse. On the last weekend of July, the Catalpa NYC festival takes the stage, with Electric Zoo scheduled for Labor Day weekend. Information.
