As a child, he made toys with found objects for himself and his friends in his neighborhood. When he was a teenager, he started repairing or reconstructing the furniture in his family house and carved out designs on the wooden front door of the living room. Recognizing his talent, his father encouraged him to study art. In 1990 he graduated from the Addis Ababa University School of Fine Art and Design in graphics art. Soon after he graduated, he completely abandoned graphics art and began making collages. One of Sime’s favorite things to do is collecting anything he finds interesting to apply in his art. Most of his works are made from collections of old items gathered from around the city, particularly in Chid Tera or Menyalesh Tera in Merkato. Merkato is the largest open ...

Press Review about Armory Show 2012

Taking inspiration from the solo booths at sister fair Volta NY, the   Armory Show   has added a Solo Projects section dedicated to single-artist presentations. The geographically-specific Armory Focus section, curated by Malmö Konsthall director Jacob Fabricius, is devoted to galleries from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland and Iceland. The Nordic theme continues at the Open Forum series of talks and panels with a conversation between Icelandic musician Bjork and artist Ragnar Kjartansson, who represented Iceland in the 53rd Venice Biennale in 2009. At David Zwirner, look for Michael Riedel’s site-specific installation made especially for the Armory Show. read more: http://artlog.com/posts/337-the-armory-week-guide

2011 GABRIEL KURI The Armory Show has commissioned Mexican-born, Belgium-based artist Gabriel Kuri to create the visual identity for the 2011 fair. Kuri’s artwork, which often combines everyday detritus and commonplace materials in unexpectedly poetic juxtapositions, will set the aesthetic for the fair’s look, will be featured in all its advertising and marketing materials and will be showcased in the catalogue. This will be the tenth year The Armory Show has commissioned an artist to define the image of the fair. Gabriel Kuri is renowned for sculptures and collages made from the remains of everyday purchases and found objects. Kuri reconfigures meaning from tickets and receipts, retail supplies and slabs of marble, stones and other incongruous materials. “We are very happy to have Gabriel Kuri contribute his unique sensibility to The Armory Show’s image,” said Executive Director Katelijne De Backer. “We look forward to sharing his gift for allusion and his lyrical combinations with th...

Susan Collis ...and the Armory Show

Susan Collis named The Armory Show’s 2010 Commissioned Artist British artist known for meticulous replicas of everyday objects The Armory Show has commissioned British artist Susan Collis to create the visual identity for the 2010 fair. Collis’s artwork, which concentrates on meticulous recreations of everyday objects, will set the aesthetic for the fair’s look, will be featured in all of the fair’s advertising and marketing materials and will be showcased in the catalogue. This will be the ninth year The Armory Show has commissioned an artist to define the image of the fair. Collis is known for painstaking facsimiles of mundane objects, which force viewers to reconsider details they may not have initially paid attention to. In "Made Good" (2007), a typical piece for the artist, what initially looks like a Phillips screw sticking out of the gallery wall is in fact made of gems and precious metals. As part of the installation/performance “SWEAT” (2008), a digital clock seems t...
