2014 marks an auspicious year for the Neuberger Museum of Art of Purchase College, SUNY – it’s our 40th Anniversary! On Saturday, April 5, 2014 we will celebrate with our most unique and popular fundraiser, PAPER JAM 2014. PAPER JAM 2014 will feature live music, cocktails and dinner by the bite, but the main focus of the evening is the live and silent auction of art on paper. For our 40th, we will focus on a select group of 40 works on paper by 40 outstanding artists. Art to be auctioned will be posted on our website beginning March 5. Funds raised from the event support the Neuberger Museum of Art’s 40th Anniversary Season exhibitions and educational programs. Individual tickets are $150 along with ticket packages including the Papyrus level at $6,000, Parchment level at $4,000 and Vellum @ $1,500. IN THE AIR The last letter of Marcel Duchamp Concerning the creator of the ready-made, this one tops them all … The auction house is going to reveal a rather curious object, impossible to estimate and which could attract the museum of Philadelphia, the Getty Institute, the Musée des Lettres et Manuscrits in Paris, or a wealthy oligarch from an emerging country. It is the last note sent by Marcel Duchamp. It is addressed to an editor, Pierre Belfond, and has no double meaning. It simply asks him to pay Duchamp his last author’s rights as soon as possible for a series called  Entretiens  done jointly with critic Pierre Cabanne. The French artist, born in 1936, was painting in his youth portraits that are as ultrasimplified as New York school Pop Art images but differ markedly in feeling with their expressionistic handling in abruptly contrasted colors. “L’année dernière à Capri (titre exotique)” (Last Year in Capri (exotic title), portraying a young woman, could have been done as a poster. A discreet touch of Surrealism sets the portrait further apart from Pop Art. Its owner, who acquired the Raysse in 1975, was selling it for the benefit of a charitable foundation. Perhaps stirred by such prolonged faithfulness to the artist on the vendor’s part, bidders went berserk. They sent the Raysse shooting to £4.07 million.
