Stella was born to a middle-class family in Italy, in  Muro Lucano , a village near Naples, but came to  New York City  in 1896 to study medicine. [1]  However, he quickly abandoned his medical studies and turned instead to art, studying at the  Art Students League  and the New York School of Art under  William Merritt Chase . His first paintings were  Rembrandtesque  depictions of city slum life. A remarkable draftsman, he made drawings throughout the various phases of his career, beginning as an  academic   realist  with a particular interest in immigrant and ethnic life. From 1905 to 1909, he worked as an illustrator, publishing his realist drawings in magazines. "He prowled the streets, sketch pad and pencil in hand, alert to catch the pose of the moment, the detail of costume or manner that told the story of a life." In his 1925 essay, "The New Negro", Howard University Professor of Philosophy Alain Locke encouraged African American artists to create a school of African American art with an identifiable style and aesthetic, and to look to African culture and African American folk life for subject matter and inspiration. Locke's ideas, coupled with a new ethnic awareness that was occurring in urban areas, inspired up and coming African American artists. These artists rejected landscapes for the figurative, rural scenes for urban and focused on class, culture and Africa to bring ethnic consciousness into art and create a new black identity. Minimalism had literally knocked sculpture off its pedestal . Artists such as Andre, Donald Judd, and Dan Flavin challenged the traditional conventions of sculpture: representation, illusionism, craftsmanship, permanence, and even the object itself. Minimalism presented a new set of formal strategies: the grid, seriality, identical modular units, geometric structure, industrial materials, and fabrication. Post-Minimalists eagerly adopted these precepts as new jumping-off points for sculptural invention: use of unorthodox materials, serial repetition, and physicality, but with allusive references and sometimes whimsy or erotica in their creations.
