Barbara Nessim: An Artful Life September 19, 2014–January 11, 2015 Curated by Douglas Dodds, Senior Curator, Word and Image Department, Victoria and Albert Museum, London A constant innovator for more than four decades, Barbara Nessim was one of the first professional illustrators to master the computer as an artistic tool. RECENT REVIEW in the NYTIMES RADICAL PRESENCE: BLACK PERFORMANCE IN CONTEMPORARY ART September 10–December 7, 2013 Radical Presence: Black Performance in Contemporary Art chronicles the emergence and development of African American performance practices in contemporary art. Surveying the scene from the 1960s to the present day, this major exhibition examines the rich and complex history of black performance in the United States. The show features work of artists such as Benjamin Patterson (b. 1934), David Hammons (b. 1943), Senga Nengudi (b. 1943), and Coco Fusco (b.1960), who have contributed significantly to a radical shift in social thought and artistic practice. Radical Presence also includes work by younger artists such as Kalup Linzy (b. 1977) and Adam Pendleton (b. 1984), thus demonstrating the trajectory of groundbreaking performances by three generations. Alex Katz: Selections from the Whitney Museum of American Art June 29 - October 13, 2013 Alex Katz, born in 1927, is one of America’s most important and honored living artists.  This exhibition includes early landscapes and collages, as well as the enormous and  brilliantly-colored portraits of family and friends that are a hallmark of the artist’s career.  The presentation draws upon the Whitney’s extensive holdings of art by Alex Katz. The American Folk Art Museum, which vacated its building next to MoMA last year and moved to a smaller storefront near Lincoln Center due to financial difficulties, is “reasonably secure” after selling the building on West 53rd Street and receiving contributions of about $3.5 million. The news comes from  Bloomberg Businessweek , which spoke to Monty Blanchard, the museum’s volunteer president: “We’re committed to operating on a break-even basis for the indefinite future,” he told them. The museum sold its building to MoMA for $31.2 million. They occupy their current space rent-free. The museum’s acting director, Linda Dunne, told  Bloomberg , “The plus side of selling our building is that we are debt-free.” Yesterday was the museum’s 50th anniversary.
