MIAMI, NOVEMBER 15, 2010 - PULSE Contemporary Art Fair is proud to announce the exhibitors and programming for its 2010 Miami edition. The sixth edition of the fair - the first under new Director Cornell DeWitt - will offer a blend of 82 leading and emerging international galleries alongside the hallmark program of original cultural projects for which the fair is renowned. THE DECONSTRUCTIVE IMPULSE: WOMEN ARTISTS RECONFIGURE THE SIGNS OF POWER, 1973-1991 JANUARY 15-APRIL 3, 2011 This survey of leading women artists examines the crucial feminist contribution to the development of deconstructivism in the 1970s and ’80s. As the term suggests, deconstructivism involved taking apart and examining source material, generally borrowed from the mass media, to expose the ways commercial images reveal the mechanisms of power. Women had a particularly high stake in this kind of examination and were disproportionately represented among artists who practiced it. The exhibition includes 68 photographs, prints, paintings, videos, and installations by 22 artists and one artist’s collaborative. 2011 GABRIEL KURI The Armory Show has commissioned Mexican-born, Belgium-based artist Gabriel Kuri to create the visual identity for the 2011 fair. Kuri’s artwork, which often combines everyday detritus and commonplace materials in unexpectedly poetic juxtapositions, will set the aesthetic for the fair’s look, will be featured in all its advertising and marketing materials and will be showcased in the catalogue. This will be the tenth year The Armory Show has commissioned an artist to define the image of the fair. Gabriel Kuri is renowned for sculptures and collages made from the remains of everyday purchases and found objects. Metzker One of the things I like about art fairs is that they provide an opportunity to experiment, to try new combinations, to show works previously unseen. Art Miami will be no exception. In pursuing this spirit of exploration, it is not often that one can put together a relative newcomer next to an established master and create a dialogue, a synergy that leaves both artists looking better. Such is the case with Jessica Backhaus, 39, and Ray K. Metzker, 79. Jessica Backhaus since 2009 has directed her camera at the waters of Venice and Burano. Intensely observing the water rippling and splashing in the canals, she captured moments of pure lyricism. Highly abstract, richly colored, her photographs make you forget that you are actually looking at water taken in a fraction of a second.
