Egúngún Masquerade Costumes
Egúngún Festival Family Program
Saturday, April 4, 2009 | 1-4 pm
Experience with the entire family a vibrant African masquerade
still performed today: Egúngún. Workshops, performances and
members of an African village in
1-4 pm Drop-in art workshop
Children will explore African masquerade through storytelling, drumming, and
creating their own masks. (Most suitable for children ages 5-10.)
1-2 pm Layers in Motion: Egúngún Masquerade Costumes
Improvisation by the students of the Purchase Hand Drumming Ensemble, Dance
and Drama Departments, Purchase College.
2-4 pm Nigeria to Carolina: Ancestor Veneration and Egúngún Masquerade
Illustrated performance with audience participation led by Chief Alagba Olaitan
and members of Oyotunji African Village (Sheldon, South Carolina) in presence of
His Royal Majesty Oba (King) Adejuyigbe Adefunmi II of Oyotunji Village.
Admission is free for all 12-5 pm as part of our First Saturdays program.
Program support is provided by the African Council and the Museum Service Council, Neuberger
Museum of Art; anonymous donors; Jack and Jill of America, Inc.; Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Price; The Westchester Community Foundation; and the Westchester County Chapter of the Links, Inc.
